Stress and Healthcare Costs

Job stress elevates an employees’ risk for developing unhealthy behaviors like smoking, drug and alcohol and the over consumption of fatty and sweet foods. Unhealthy responses to stress discourage healthy behaviors like exercise, eating a balanced diet and making meaningful social connections. If unhealthy habits continue this cycle causes employees to be at more risk for developing anxiety or depression. While stress puts employees at higher risk for mental illness, there are numerous studies which have also linked stress to physical ailments like back pain, colorectal cancer, infectious disease, heart problems, headaches and diabetes.

  • According to the Center for Disease Control, 90% of doctor visits are stress related and preventable illness makes up at least 70% of all illness and the associated costs.

  • It is estimated that healthcare utilization induced by stress costs U.S. companies $68 billion annually and reduces profits by 10%.

  • The total cost of obesity to U.S. employers is $13 billion per year and workers’ compensation costs for a smoker averages $2,189 compared to only $176 for a nonsmoker.
